Hives are usually harmless, though bothersome. If you have a history of allergies then the diagnosis is usually more obvious. When you have an allergic reaction to any substance, the body produces histamine as well as other chemicals. These powerful chemicals can cause swelling...hives, which are raised welts on the skin. If it is hives, when you press upon it, it turns white.

Many issues trigger the onset of hives:

Animal bites.. Insect bites and stings... Many kinds of medications... Infections from illness... Stress.. Excessive perspiration... Pollens of grasses, trees, and weeds... Foods, most commonly shellfish, dairy products and eggs, nuts, and fish... Too much sun exposure... Very cold conditions...

Hives is not a serious condition normally unless the swelling is in the throat. However, hives may signal something more serious, especially if it occurs repeatedly. Usually the diagnosis identifies an allergy.
